Abstract

In 2016-2019, a scientific research project on the arcade houses and the Törten housing estate was carried out at the University of Kassel, supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Philipp Oswalt, the history and present of this landmark Bauhaus project was comprehensively researched. Fundamental new insights were gained in the project, which will be prepared and published in several publication formats.

As 2025 and 2026 will mark the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus move to Dessau and the opening of the Bauhaus building, and as the arcade houses will be at the center of the UNESCO World Heritage Day celebrations in Dessau in 2025, the conception, production and publication of the print products is coordinated with this (December 6, 2026, 100th anniversary of the opening of the Bauhaus building; 2027, 10 years of the UNESCO World Heritage Arcade Houses).

E-book: The very comprehensive scientific research report of the DFG project (approx. 700 pages) will be made available to the specialist public in 2025 as an e-publication (pdf) by the Kassel University Press. This is not suitable for a broader public. The aim is therefore to develop two different publication formats to support the transfer of knowledge and dissemination of research results.

Bauhaus pocket book: (to be coordinated with the Bauhaus Foundation). The Bauhaus pocketbook as a short and inexpensive print publication in an existing publication series makes the current state of knowledge about the arcade houses and the overall planning under Meyer accessible to a broad public in an easily understandable and appealing way: it presents the history of the arcade houses, the overall concept of the housing estate extension, the genesis of the commission, the working methods at the Bauhaus, the construction work, the history of use and the renovations. The examination will range from urban planning to interior design. An English edition is possible. This publication will appear in June 2026.

Book publication: A well-illustrated and attractively designed book publication is also in preparation for a more specialized public, which builds on the research project and presents the conception of furniture and interiors by Hannes Meyer. This hitherto little-noticed subject represents a core of innovation at the Dessau Bauhaus, and is contextualized with Hannes Meyer's earlier and later work on furniture and his residential biography. The book will be published by the renowned Swiss publishing house Park Books. This publication will appear in summer/fall 2025.
