Abstract
On the basis of ab initio calculations we predict that in Arsenic under pressure a solid-solid phase transition from the A7 structure, which is stabilized by the Peierls mechanism, into the simple cubic structure, which has no Peierls distortion, can be induced by an ultrashort laser pulse. A comparison between the local density approximation and the generalized gradient approximation shows that our prediction does not depend on the approximation used.
