Abstract
The demographic change in Germany, i. e. the shrinking and ageing of the population, has not only serious consequences on the welfare system, but also on spatial structure and transportation. The article points out the context of causes and effects between population, transport demand, and further influencing variables of transport demand (economy, public authorities, and individual). Firstly, future developments of the influencing variables of transport demand are analysed. Based on these trends the transport demand, especially the demand for public transport, is estimated for the future.
